Gladius is the Roman word for sword. In the hard world that was ancient Rome, gladiators lived or died by the gladius. Criminals, slaves and foreigners had to fight for their lives in state-sanctioned death matches. Everyone is familiar with the Coliseum, but there were arenas throughout the Empire. Commoners and aristocrats alike would crowd the arena to watch gladiators face off against each other; the way crowds today pack stadiums for sporting events. As the blood spilled, the crowd became more and more enthusiastic.
The arenas didn't just pit human against human. Sometimes the battles were man against beast. Sometimes elaborate weapons were available for the gladiators to use, and group versus group battles were held. There were even naval battles. Fights weren't always fair, either. If you were guilty of a crime, or a political prisoner, the odds might be stacked horribly against you, depending on your crimes, your sentence, or the whims of the officials in charge.
